Young Democratic Socialists & the

National Youth and Student Peace Coalition Events

Washington, DC 1/27-28th

The Young Democratic Socialists were proud to participate in United for Peace and Justice’s January 27th 2007 rally for peace in Washington, DC.  Over 20 YDS members and friends joined together representing several states, 2 chapters, and American University.  At this critical time in the national debate on the Iraq War, YDS and others recognized the need to send a message to the Congressional representatives whose election victories were based in large part to the anti-war vote.  To end the war sooner than later requires coordinated work between different currents in the peace movement as exemplified at the UFPJ march.

Solidarity was also shown as YDS joined with other peace activists both before and after the march.  Democratic Socialists of America (YDS’s parent organization) and YDS marched jointly for the first time in years at a major rally.  YDS and DSA met up with fellow National Youth and Student Peace Coalition members at the Department of Education.  Afterwards, several dozen DSA and YDS members joined for a gathering of appetizers and bonding at a local restaurant.  YDS’s active participation in both youth coalition and multi-generational work symbolizes more of the unity that is needed in the peace movement.

For those who came, thank you.  For those who didn’t, see you next time!
